Learn. Share. Connect. Grow.
Working in wellness can sometimes feel surprisingly independent, even when we're surrounded by clients all day.
The Solo Spa Pros Community is a place for massage therapists, estheticians, and other wellness professionals to stay connected, continue learning, exchange ideas, and be part of conversations with others who understand the work we do.
There is no single way to participate. Join the email community, take part in course conversations, connect with us on social media, attend a workshop, or simply follow along until something catches your interest.

Compensation, Expectations, and Career Decisions!
A spa position can sound wonderful during the interview, but the advertised commission, flexible schedule, gratuity potential, and employee benefits may not tell the whole story. This practical course helps massage therapists look beyond the job posting and understand how an employment opportunity may actually affect their income, schedule, workload, physical well-being, and career satisfaction.
Through guided discussion, realistic examples, income calculations, and job-comparison activities, participants will learn how to evaluate the complete opportunity and make career decisions based on their professional, financial, and personal priorities.
In this course, participants will learn how to:
- Compare spa, resort, franchise, wellness-center, and independent-contractor opportunities.
- Differentiate between hourly, commission-based, service-rate, and blended compensation structures.
- Calculate more realistic earnings using wages, commissions, gratuities, bonuses, unpaid time, cancellations, and client demand.
- Identify responsibilities that may not be fully explained during the hiring process.
- Consider the effect of schedule gaps, required availability, cleaning, laundry, meetings, training, and sales expectations.
- Evaluate benefits, workplace policies, advancement opportunities, physical workload, and workplace culture.
- Recognize missing information and potential warning signs in job postings and interviews.
- Develop meaningful questions to ask before accepting a position.
- Apply the Recognize → Question → Document → Verify process when reviewing employment information.
- Compare opportunities according to income needs, schedule preferences, physical capacity, career goals, and personal priorities.

A Business Building Workshop for Massage Therapists
Making the move from employee to independent massage therapist can create greater control over your income, schedule, workload, clients, and professional direction—but building a successful solo practice requires more than finding a room and setting your prices. This practical workshop helps massage therapists understand the business foundations involved in creating an independent practice that is financially realistic, professionally sound, and sustainable.
Through guided discussion, business-planning exercises, realistic income and expense calculations, and hands-on workshop activities, participants will develop their own practice framework while exploring business models, pricing, workload capacity, client policies, marketing, retention, and the practical steps involved in going solo.
Participants will leave with an individualized 90-day action plan for moving their practice forward.
In this course, participants will learn how to:
- Compare different solo-practice models, including room rental, private suites, shared spaces, home-based, mobile, contract, and hybrid practices.
- Define services, clientele, scheduling preferences, and other components of an individualized practice model.
- Identify common startup needs, operating expenses, business systems, and professional resources.
- Differentiate between service revenue, business expenses, and actual business income.
- Evaluate pricing in relation to expenses, income goals, appointment capacity, and sustainable workload.
- Determine a realistic number of appointments based on financial goals and physical capacity.
- Develop professional client policies addressing scheduling, cancellations, payments, communication, and boundaries.
- Create a client experience that supports rebooking, retention, referrals, and long-term professional relationships.
- Identify practical strategies for attracting initial clients through networking, referrals, local visibility, and ethical marketing.
- Evaluate how business decisions involving pricing, scheduling, workload, and client volume work together.
- Develop an individualized 90-day action plan for researching, preparing, launching, or strengthening a solo massage practice.

Reset, Refocus and Move Forward.
You don’t have to be struggling in your massage career to need a reset. As your experience, priorities, physical capacity, financial needs, interests, and goals change, it can be helpful to step out of the day-to-day routine and take an intentional look at where you are, what’s working, what needs attention, and where you want to go next.
The Massage Career Reset is a practical, interactive course designed to help massage therapists evaluate their professional lives as a whole. Whether you are employed, self-employed, building a practice, considering a change, or simply wondering what your next stage might look like, this course provides a structured process for assessing your current situation and turning what you discover into a realistic plan for moving forward.
Through guided discussion, professional self-assessment, real-world massage career examples, decision-making exercises, and individual planning activities, participants will work through the Assess → Identify → Evaluate → Prioritize → Plan process and leave with a personalized 30-day Massage Career Reset plan.
In this course, participants will learn how to:
- Assess key areas of their massage career, including workload, scheduling, clients, income, work environment, autonomy, boundaries, professional development, and long-term sustainability.
- Identify what is currently working well and what may need attention, improvement, or change.
- Distinguish between surface-level concerns and the underlying professional factors contributing to them.
- Apply the Control → Influence → Adapt framework to workplace, career, and practice challenges.
- Explore professional growth opportunities without assuming there is one “right” career path.
- Evaluate potential opportunities based on impact, feasibility, time, financial resources, required skills, responsibilities, risk, and sustainability.
- Differentiate between an idea, a goal, a priority, and an actionable next step.
Determine which area of professional development deserves attention now.
- Identify potential obstacles, resources, and support needed to move forward.
- Establish meaningful indicators for measuring progress.
- Create a personalized 30-Day Massage Career Reset Plan with specific actions and an evaluation date.
- Identify one concrete action to begin within the first 72 hours.
You do not need to know what you want to change before you arrive, that’s part of the Reset.
This workshop is designed to help you step back, assess where you are now, identify what deserves your attention, explore your options, and determine a realistic next step. No massage table, linens, oils, or other hands-on massage supplies are required.
